Google has recently introduced the Data Highlighter tool in the Google Webmaster Tools. It is a simple tool through which you can customize the look in your search for events being held on your site e.g. movies, sporting events, festivals, giveaways, contests etc.

To find this tool, go to Webmaster Tools and under Optimization, you will find Data Highlighter (below Structured Data).

This tool is meant to show the events in your site's search results and provide users with a better search experience. It has been only 4 days since it's launch and at this initial stage it is only for English. But Google has plans to make this tool compatible with more languages in the coming months.

Features of the Data Highlighter Tool :

The greatest advantage of using this tool is that you don't have to change any codes in your web pages. To highlight some of the events, you simply have to drag your mouse over your writings and publish it. Piece of cake.

Take a look at the picture below.

Another great advantage of using this tool would be to you can tag similar pages with hosted events.

According to Google, if you can tag 5-10 of these similar pages, then their complex algorithms will know of the format on your site. From then on, when googlebots crawl your site they will automatically add the events in your search results for better user experience.

Here's two images of how things will look.

To monitor the crawled data, you have to use the Structured Data Dashboard on the Google Webmaster Tools.

Here's also a video of how the process works.

Do you have a site which regularly hosts events ? Start using this great tool right now.
